Parents and teachers helped students prepare healthy recipes
St John's Primary, Riverstone welcomed healthy eating with a difference with Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution Day on Friday 15 May.
Students and families from the St John’s community took part in one of Jamie’s classroom lessons, that aim to teach students life skills through healthy and simple recipes.
St John’s Primary Principal, Patricia Charlton, and 15 parent helpers organised the day with students.
Lessons of the day included preparing a wide range of fresh salads and Jamie’s ‘squash it’ sandwiches, as well as identifying healthy food choices.
St John’s parent and mother of two, Amanda McIntyre, who first saw Jamie Oliver live earlier this year, said she was inspired to bring the initiative to the school.
‘By educating children about food in a fun and engaging way, we can equip them with the basic skills they need to lead healthier, happier lives, for themselves and their future families,’ Amanda said.
Patricia said the event held dual purposes as it also encouraged children to read and follow recipes as well as teaching healthy food choices.
‘When Amanda approached me about the idea I thought it was a great opportunity to expose our children to a healthy lunch and a way to promote the healthy snack options,’ Patricia said.
‘The students had a lot of fun working with their teachers and learning about healthy food choices,’ Patricia said. ‘The event was an excellent community builder which offered our parents an opportunity to be further involved in their child’s learning.’
The focus of the celebrity chef’s global campaign is pushing for practical food education to be made a compulsory part of school curriculums.

Year 1 enjoyed a visit from Father Zak this week as a culmination to our Religion unit on 'Prayer'. 🙏 He spoke to the students about how prayer nourishes the soul and reminded us that Jesus is present in us all. The children loved listening to his stories and asked him LOTS of questions! Father Zak then shared a decade of The Rosary with the students. We are so grateful to share our learning with Father Zak. ✝️🤍02 Jul 2025
